Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:16

Around 150 people attended a meeting at the Dixon High School auditorium Wednesday evening to listen to Superintendent Michael Juenger discuss declining state support for public education, and the proposed cuts in next years budget caused by those cuts.  Questions were asked about cuts in specific areas and the increases in class sizes.

The Board of Education will be making decisions about final cuts to programs and staff at upcoming board meetings.

To view the budget slides from the meeting follow this link.

Informational Meeting on Budget Reductions

There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the DHS Auditorium to explain to the staff and the public the plans for budget reductions for the coming school year.

At their last meeting, the Board of Education was presented a general overview of how we plan to cut spending primarily in the Education Fund.  Spending needs to be reduced in the neighborhood of $1.6 million, this determination is based upon this year’s revenue levels.  If the District were to receive less revenue from the State (a distinct possibility) that number would need to be revised.  Cuts are being recommended throughout the District.

A Message from Superintendent Michael Juenger

It is the intent of the Administration of the Dixon Public Schools to keep the public and staff as informed as possible.  This Question & Answer forum has been established to provide accurate answers and information to the questions that are being asked.

Question:  Will there be cuts in non-educational programs such as the sport programs to help keep a quality education for our children?  I know the Booster Club is active and generates much revenue for the programs, and that the parents pay fees for their children to play sports, does this cover the entire sports budget?  If not how much does the District pay to keep these programs and could some of it be better used to help keep education programs?

Answer:  Lower level programs are being looked at as places to reduce costs.  The booster clubs do an excellent job of raising funds, but their efforts do not cover the entire cost of our Musical, Drama, or athletic programs.

Volcanoes are a Blast Print

Mrs. Clevenger’s third graders had fun exploding volcanoes on February 9th. They spent time researching volcanoes, writing reports, and giving presentations. On the final day they built volcanoes out of play-doh and erupted them with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Every year third graders read a story about Mt. Vesuvius and the lost city of Pompeii.

How much huffing and puffing would it take to blow a house down?  Could Rapunzel really have had someone climb her hair?  Find out in this light-hearted look at the "science" behind these classic fairy tales. Come to Lincoln School on Tuesday, March 23rd and find out!

Lincoln School is hosting another Discovery Center outreach program, Tuesday, March 23rd, from 6:00-7:30PM at Lincoln School gym.  This program is for 2nd and 3rd grade students only.  You can drop in any time between 6-7:30PM and enjoy a fun time with your parents.  There will be 10 activity stations of experiments, games, and make-and-take projects! What a FUN way to learn about science and how it relates to fairy tales.

Look for more information coming home in the Wednesday envelopes this week.  You will need to sign up to attend and there will be raffles for fairy tale books!  Come and have fun, learn about science, and maybe win a book!  Lincoln School teachers look forward to seeing you there!

Fun With Fathers Print

Approximately 200 Dads, or VIPs, attended Washington School's Fun With Fathers early in the morning on February 3&4th.  The gymnasium was rockin' as Dads tried to keep up with their children during Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). The popular ACTIVE video game was projected onto the wall of the stage while everyone followed the arrows to move on their own "dance pad"--a great exercise in directionality!
Dads were introduced to a mini-Physical Education class and followed their child's daily activity.  We started with routine exercises including jumping jacks, mountain climbers, push-ups and stretches.  Dads did a terrific job with push-ups (as pictured)!! We also did the Chicken Dance and Hokey Pokey.  It was great to see Dads participating with their children and it was great to see all the smiles!!
