If you have any questions or comments about the movement of the 5th grade from Reagan Middle School to Jefferson please feel free to email us at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

What will happen with the newly created 5-8 grade cross country team? Will 5th graders not be included now?  What will happen with beginning 5th grade band?

There are no plans to change 5th grade participation in athletics or intramurals.  I spoke with Mr. Gould and he believes we will have an area for Band practice and to store instruments, we would need to work through the scheduling details

Gifted Program Meeting Print
Written by M. Juenger
Friday, 07 May 2010 09:58
Recently the Administration met on two consecutive evenings with concerned students, parents and staff members.  The purpose was to discuss the status of the Gifted Program and how it would be affected by the budget reductions for next year.

During the meeting, the Board Policy and the State guidelines for Gifted Education was discussed (Click here to read more about the local and State guidelines for the Gifted Program), the fact that Gifted Education has not been funded by the State since before the 2006-07 school year, the history of the Dixon Challenge Program (the local name for the gifted program), grades 3-8 program eligibility, the District’s current practice, and the future of the program.  Much of the concern centered around the belief that the program was going to be eliminated.

The Big Read Creates Readers, Writers, Artists, & Rappers

This year’s Sauk Valley Big Read gave DPS students the opportunity to be readers, writers, artists, and rappers as they participated in various activities associated with The Call of the Wild by Jack London and Akiak by Robert Blake.  The Big Read is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in cooperation with Arts Midwest “designed to restore reading to the center of American culture” (“About the Big Read”).  The Sterling Public Library applied for the Big Read grant to promote reading in the Sauk Valley.  Schools and public libraries in the area received books and other materials from the grant.
At Washington School, Mrs. Brantner read the book, Akiak by Robert Blake to each class during their library visit.  She also talked to the students about the Iditarod dog sled race.  Students especially loved learning about the dogs and appreciated the large stuffed dog that sat with them as they listened to the story.
